Asian Trailer Report: “Goemon”

Posted by renny On December - 31 - 2008

goemon Kazuaki Kiriya (Casshern) is back again and his latest effort already looks amazing. All the hype surrounding GOEMON will be pushed far more then his previous movie. After this trailer, all the borders between Anime and Life Action Film will be gone, since this is by far the most amazing trailer I’ve seen in a long time, especially by a director who knows how to impress audiences visually! Once again a production which is completely done in HD and Green Screens :)… But hey, if they get it right maybe we’ll see our favorite anime characters soon in amazing 3D worlds.

Have fun seeing the trailer. Release for the movie is scheduled for May the 1st 2009.

Trailer Report: “Crank: High-Voltage”

Posted by guddy On December - 31 - 2008

crank2

When it comes to mindless (in the most precise meaning of the word) action, Jason Stathan is your guy. The plot outline for “Crank” was stupid as it could be, with a guy who gets injected with a drug that kills him if his adrenaline level drops. As stupid as it may sound, it is the ultimate orgasmic dream for action fans, since the GUY CAN’T STOP!!

In part 2, his heart gets replaced by an indestructible electric counterpart, that needs an energy pump once in awhile. This Red-Band trailer shows that “Crank: High Voltage” aims to make part 1 look like a Disney flick. It really is that crazy!! Stathan even gets to the point of sticking a shotgun up someone’s… Well, you get the idea. The trailer is not for the faint of heart (hence the Red-Band), but if violence and titties is your thing, check it out, because it features just about that:

First, I will keep this one short, because I wrote about the trailer for part two. So here you have a quick review for part one and WATCH :-) it:

Storm Riders, directed by Andrew Lau (His first attempt on U.S. soil: The Flock, starring Richard Gere 0_o ?) is based on a comic book called “Tin Ha”. It stars Ekin Cheng as Wind and Aaron Kwok as Cloud.

Storm Riders is an amazing Chinese fantasy movie! If you think, “ahh” another Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, you are not even close. Storm Riders combines great visual effects with exciting and original sword fighting. The sword fighting along with some hand to hand action is purely of the fantasy kind, consisting of swords throwing huge waves of energy, to whirlwind kicks and manipulating liquid to be used as a weapon. There is also real fighting mixed in there to keep you from saying this is too much, maybe…

Sounds a bit crazy, doesn’t it? It needs to me understood that this film is based on a comic book. The story is about two young boys who are raised and ruled by the man who killed their parents and grow up to become martial arts masters. If you have an open mind when it comes to fantasy you will surely enjoy this. I was thoroughly impressed and must recommend checking this out ;-) … even for today this 10 year old flick kicks some serious butt!

So this will be the last update by me for 2008… Happy New Year ! ! !

Oh, and keep on movie-ing ;-)

Trailer Report: “State of Play”

Posted by guddy On December - 26 - 2008

state-of-play-movie-poster-1In the world of conspiracies, Hollywood always seems to cash away with the usual “small timer gets the scoop on a big story”. But I think we as a public just don’t care anymore. Plus, we might be tired of seeing people trying to shoot Russell Crowe and miss.

Even so, the pace in this short trailer isn’t bad, and the story, about a journalist who investigated the murder of a congressman’s mistress who was on to a big conspiracy, might be a fine example of “who-done-it” screenwriting. But, probably not. Good mysteries revolve around something much bigger that we can relate to. It seems the mistress was investigating some sort of big company, so we don’t care. Conspiracies have to do with our world, someone investigating an affair that Bush had with Cartman, or whatever. The thing “big-bad-company” vs. “small-sexy-mistress” has been done before (not exactly in that way, but yes it has). Anyway, if you are a Russell Crowe (who seems to be doing his part well in this movie, as usual) fan and I just shattered your Christmas by telling you I’m not impressed with the trailer, check it out for yourself and please comment so that you can shatter mine as well:

Trailer Report: “Samurai Zombie”

Posted by renny On December - 25 - 2008

Samurai_Zombie Dysfunctional family members, insane gun wielding maniacs (reminds me in some way of “Versus 1+2”) severed limbs aplenty, buckets of blood and of course ancient undead warriors! What else do you when you see a trailer what promises you all that :D? Except for the fact that you may not like it, but hey, Kill Bill was the same or maybe not… Whatever…

This is the first trailer for Tak Sakaguchi’s funny Samurai Zombie. The plot: A family on a trip encounters a man threatening them with a gun on a desolate mountain trail. At a moment of maximum tension, a couple shows up out of nowhere, kills the man and disappears again. Shortly after a lunatic old lady comes and warns them of their impending death, the frightened family is headed for a showdown with Samurai Zombies resurrected from their graves.

The look feels cheap on some level but still, it is in his best tradition on bloody fun heroes who save the world once again ;) have fun checking out the Trailer:

PS: the movie is expected to premiere on February the 14th 2009.

Trailer Report: “Storm Raiders 2”

Posted by renny On December - 25 - 2008

Storm_Riders_2 Merry X-Mas everybody. This is Renny, the new reviewer here at Critical Film Condition, bringing you the first Trailer Report for Asian Cinema. This segment of the website will be destined to film and trailer reviews (just like the regular reviews), except it will be dedicated to new Visions from the lands of the East :-). I hope you guys who like Asian Movies out there give us your feedback with comments and such.

There have been rumors about this movie since the first one came out back in 1998. When I first saw it, it reminded me of an epic anime (which it is) transformed into a big motion picture (what it was for that time from Asia… it did even receive a lot of critical accolades for it). If just Dragon Ball Evolution would be like that :-/ but we´ll see and hope for the best ;-)

This here will Rock as Hell for all of you who like Asian Cinema at it’s best…Especially considering that the Directors are the Pang Brothers (Bangkok Dangerous), who want to do the best FX Movie in the last decade with an bigger budget…

The Storm Riders II Special FX were created by Fat Face, the Hong Kong effects house that did an amazing work on the previous Pang bros film “Re-Cycle”.

Other talent on the sequel are art director Yee Chung Man (Curse Of The Golden Flower) and action director Choi Shing (Bichunmoo).

At least we see in the Teaser Trailer that the all-star cast from the first one, including some new Asian Cinema Super Stars, will be back again for a mind-blowing fight against evil ;D nothing more to add now but soon, when we see the movie, you’ll get the final Review, even if it takes maybe a year for that to happen, but we’ll keep you posted :)

The interesting thing about the story this time around is that it’ll be a whole new vision. Not a sequel, not a remake, but a completely new story, with some characters from the original and new ones as well. Hopefully it doesn’t fail because of the hype that it is gaining, but considering the creators, I don’t think so.

Check out the Trailer here and a great website for the movie…

We hope we can get you all the infos from here at Critical Film Condition, and check out my Asian Cinema Reviews later on.

Peace, and keep on movie-ing.

Blu-Ray Review: “The Dark Knight”

Critical Film Condition Review

While the movie “The Dark Knight” suffered with an overwhelming accumulation of hype, most would say it lived up to it. This Blu-Ray is probably the most anticipated release in the history of the format, and while the fact that “The Dark Knight” is one of the greatest movies in recent memory is only a part of that.

One of the great things about Blu-Ray is picture quality. Those fortunate enough to be able to enjoy movies in a FullHD rig have noticed that some movies, especially Visual Effects loaded spectacles, tend to look amazingly crispy clean on their TV sets, and this is due to the fact that 1080p picture has four times the amount of pixels on the screen than a regular DVD. And “The Dark Knight” marks one great exception, because some parts of the movie were shot in 70mm IMAX film (for laymen out there, think of this as FullHD with about a ton of nitrous oxide). The problem is that for some this may be a double-edged sword. Yes, the IMAX shots are by far the most amazing thing EVER in a Blu-Ray disk. The opening shot of the movie, with a total shot of the city, will be the thing to show jealous friends who haven’t yet joined the world of High-Definition. The Batpod chase is the action sequence of the year, and it too has been shot in IMAX format. But my grudge with this is that the 70mm and 35mm sequences have different aspect ratios (with x height of the picture). It didn’t trouble ME specifically, since the transitions are very well done and not off-putting in any way. But since Critical Film Condition is written with the public in mind, this Blu-Ray lost one point in picture quality. The fact that the IMAX shots fully occupy your screen, while the 35mm ones have black lines along the top and bottom of the screen might be troublesome for others (not likely, though). On a side note, some might say that they could have scaled the 35mm segments to fill the screen, but that wouldn’t give you the full presentation, so I think the right decision was made, with the small sacrifice of having to change aspect ratios.

Not the same with audio, though. While some studios might be getting the little kinks and tricks with Dolby FullHD sound, “The Dark Knight” excels by presenting crystal clear sound, with powerful moments. Seriously, the Joker dialogues where he explains his scars shook the ground, and I don’t even have a sub-woofer installed. This is one line delivered. The explosions are at the limit between powerful and clear, and I really have yet to find a grudge with the audio on this disk… It is, for lack of a better word, perfect.

My biggest problem with “The Dark Knight” Blu-Ray, though, are the extras, or lack of it, thereof. I bought the 2-Disk Blu-Ray, expecting a second disk loaded with documentaries and making-offs, and while it does have something, it is far from living up to the hype of the movie itself. There is no documentary whatsoever about Heath Ledger’s preparations for his creation of the Joker character, and the first disk doesn’t have a commentary track by director Christopher Nolan. I know they did the online joint-session of the movie, but that was reserved to only a few people, and with such an epic movie, we do want do know curious things about the production from the director’s point of view. I’m not saying that there aren’t many extras in this Blu-Ray presentation, it’s only too “common”. With an exceptional movie as “The Dark Knight”, you expect an exceptional amount of extras.

I, for one, buy Blu-Rays to watch the movies. Of course, being in the movie business, I watch all the extras, but I do it once, maybe twice. But it’s most important to me that the movie is scaled right, the audio is good, etc. And “The Dark Knight” doesn’t disappoint. It sets a new benchmark for the Blu-Ray format in terms of video and audio quality, with the tiny problem of the changing aspect ratios throughout the movie. The extras are nice, nothing exceptional, but if you want to watch an epic movie, already among the best in history, with the best audio and picture quality in a Blu-Ray disk yet, “The Dark Knight” is a definite must.

Trailer Report: “9”

Posted by guddy On December - 24 - 2008

ShaneAcker-9poster-770058Eye-brows go sky-high when the names Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov appear as producers for an animated feature. And though I’d never heard of Shane Acker, he is introduced as yet another “visionary” director, and this trailer shows that this movie might not disappoint.

Featuring voice talents by Elijah Wood, Jennifer Connely and other heavy-hitters, “9” tells the story of a little “creature” that has to do “something” while fighting bigger ”creatures” after the world has ended. He gets the help of 8 other “creatures” (hence the title), and while the plot outline looks abstract at best, the visual style of the trailer and the feel of the adventure just seem right. And while it is strange to see Bekmambetov taking on the role of producer so early in his Hollywood career, I’m curious to see what he can cook up with Tim Burton… That is, if the “visionary” director is up for the challenge of putting it on the screen.
